Karlsborg Fortress is a 19th-century military fortress in the town of Karlsborg in western Sweden, built as part of national defence plans after the Napoleonic era. It was conceived as a central reserve stronghold and features a large citadel and associated garrison buildings.
The complex includes extensive masonry fortifications, barracks, magazines and defensive works typical of 19th-century fortress construction. Today parts of the site function as museums and cultural attractions, with interpretation of the fortress’s role and architecture and occasional public access to interior rooms and underground passages.
The fortress is located in the town of Karlsborg on the shore of a large lake in western Sweden and forms a prominent local landmark with easy road access from surrounding communities.
