Karakul (Tajikistan)
Lake High-altitude lake near Pamir peaks
A high-altitude lake in Gorno-Badakhshan, Karakul sits beneath snow-capped peaks and attracts photographers, nomad camps and drivers on the Pamir Highway.
Karakul is a high-altitude lake on the Pamir plateau in Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region of eastern Tajikistan, set amid rugged mountains. The lake sits at roughly 3,900 metres above sea level and is ringed by bare peaks and high plateaus.
The lakeshore is characterised by open plains used seasonally by herders and by scenic viewpoints popular with travellers on the Pamir Highway. Facilities are limited and accommodation is typically basic, including seasonal yurts and small guesthouses.
Karakul forms part of the high Pamir landscape and lies near the border region with China, visible from the main east-west routes that cross the Pamir plateau. The surrounding terrain is remote, with access commonly via the M41 (Pamir Highway) and high mountain passes.
- High altitude and access: Located along the Pamir plateau, the lake sits at high elevation and is a common overnight stop for travellers on the M41 Pamir Highway; altitude can cause breathlessness for unacclimatised visitors.
