Kapaleeshwarar Temple is a Hindu temple in the Mylapore neighborhood of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, dedicated to Lord Shiva; the site has origins going back many centuries and the present complex contains major elements from the early modern period. The temple is one of Chennai’s best-known religious landmarks.
The complex includes a tall, ornate Dravidian-style rajagopuram, multiple mandapams and shrines, and a rectangular temple tank; the main sanctum enshrines Shiva as Kapaleeshwarar and a prominent shrine is dedicated to the goddess Karpagambal. Pilgrims and visitors come for daily puja, ritual bathing at the tank and the large annual Panguni procession each March-April.
The site has ancient origins in the Mylapore religious landscape and the present temple complex was substantially rebuilt and expanded in the early modern period under local rulers and patrons. Over time the temple has remained an active center of Shaiva worship and a focal point for community festivals.
The temple sits in central-south Chennai in the historic neighborhood of Mylapore, a short distance inland from the Bay of Bengal and well within the urban fabric of the city. It is easily reached from central Chennai by road or local transport.
