Kangean Islands
Islands Chain of Indonesian islands north of Bali and Java
The Kangean Islands north of Bali offer scattered beaches, traditional fishing communities and reefs; visitors come for boat trips, local markets and off-the-beaten-track coastal scenery.
The Kangean Islands are an irregular archipelago in the Java Sea, administratively part of Sumenep Regency in East Java, Indonesia. The group includes several inhabited and uninhabited islets with Kangean Island as the largest.
Small fishing settlements, stretches of sandy shoreline and nearshore coral and seagrass habitats are the primary on-island attractions. The islands lie off the northeastern coast of Madura and are accessed mainly by local boat services rather than regular commercial ferries.
The islands have long been used by local communities for fishing and small-scale agriculture; administrative ties are with Sumenep Regency. There are no widely known large-scale historical constructions documented on the islands.
Geographically the archipelago sits in the eastern Java Sea north of Madura and off the northeastern coast of Java. The nearest major administrative center is Sumenep on Madura Island.
Tips for Visiting Kangean Islands #
- Visit in Indonesia's drier months (roughly May-September) when sea conditions are calmer and inter-island boat services are more reliable.
- Tourist infrastructure is limited across the islands-plan and book accommodation and any boat transfers in advance, and carry sufficient local cash because card acceptance can be scarce.
Best Time to Visit Kangean Islands #
Visit during the dry season (May-October) for the most reliable weather and easier sea access.
