Main image

Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is the principal and most elaborate Shiva temple in the western group of the Khajuraho monuments in Madhya Pradesh, India, built in the early 11th century by the Chandela dynasty. It is celebrated for its high central spire and profuse sculptural decoration.

The temple’s plan centers on the garbhagriha or sanctum with a large Shiva linga, approached through mandapas and surrounded by a cluster of subsidiary spires that rise to form a richly articulated skyline. Exterior walls are densely carved with figural sculpture and iconography.

Built under Chandela patronage in the early 1000s CE, the temple exemplifies the mature phase of northern Indian temple architecture and served as an active religious center. It survived as part of the Khajuraho group of monuments, which were later protected and conserved.

Kandariya Mahadeva stands within the Khajuraho temple complex in Chhatarpur district, Madhya Pradesh, and is managed as part of the larger Khajuraho Group of Monuments, a short drive from the small town of Khajuraho and accessible from regional transport hubs.

  • Significance: The temple is the largest and most ornate of the Khajuraho western group and is often singled out for the complexity of its shikhara and sculptural program.

What to See #

  • Garbhagriha (sanctum): The inner sanctum houses the main linga and is surrounded by concentric passageways and small subsidiary chambers typical of Shiva temples in the region.
  • Main shikhara and spire cluster: A soaring central shikhara rising above the sanctuary, with profuse exterior sculpture and tiers of subsidiary spires that define the temple's skyline.
  • Mandapas and exterior carvings: Mandapa assembly halls and carved exterior walls covered in figurative and narrative sculpture dating to the temple's construction period.
