Kandariya Mahadeva Temple
Religious Site Ornate 11th-century Hindu temple at Khajuraho
Principal temple at Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh, celebrated for a towering shikhara and dense carved sculptures; visitors examine Chandela-period stone reliefs and temple layout.
Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is the principal and most elaborate Shiva temple in the western group of the Khajuraho monuments in Madhya Pradesh, India, built in the early 11th century by the Chandela dynasty. It is celebrated for its high central spire and profuse sculptural decoration.
The temple’s plan centers on the garbhagriha or sanctum with a large Shiva linga, approached through mandapas and surrounded by a cluster of subsidiary spires that rise to form a richly articulated skyline. Exterior walls are densely carved with figural sculpture and iconography.
Built under Chandela patronage in the early 1000s CE, the temple exemplifies the mature phase of northern Indian temple architecture and served as an active religious center. It survived as part of the Khajuraho group of monuments, which were later protected and conserved.
Kandariya Mahadeva stands within the Khajuraho temple complex in Chhatarpur district, Madhya Pradesh, and is managed as part of the larger Khajuraho Group of Monuments, a short drive from the small town of Khajuraho and accessible from regional transport hubs.
- Significance: The temple is the largest and most ornate of the Khajuraho western group and is often singled out for the complexity of its shikhara and sculptural program.
