How to Get to Kampong Ayer
Kampong Ayer is the historic water village on the Brunei River adjacent to Bandar Seri Begawan. Fly into Brunei International (BWN) and finish the trip by taxi into town and a short water-taxi ride to the stilt houses; the water taxi is the quintessential local connector.
Brunei International Airport (BWN): Brunei’s national airport is the practical arrival point for Kampong Ayer/Bandar Seri Begawan. Taxis from the airport to the riverfront in Bandar Seri Begawan take roughly 15-20 minutes and typically cost around BND 10-15. Some hotels offer paid airport transfers and there is limited public bus service into town (cheaper but slower).
(No other regular commercial airports serve Bandar Seri Begawan directly): Regional crossings by land/sea from nearby Malaysian Sarawak exist but are not main routes for international visitors.
Train: Brunei has no national passenger rail service.
Bus / Water taxi: Local buses and taxis connect the airport and city roads; the unique last-mile mode to Kampong Ayer is by water taxi (longboats) from Bandar Seri Begawan’s river jetties. Short water-taxi rides to Kampong Ayer villages are inexpensive (small nominal fares-often under BND 1 per person for short hops) and take just a few minutes; taxis on land are the usual option for land-side travel around the capital.
How to Get Around Kampong Ayer #
Kampong Ayer is best explored on foot along the stilt walkways that link the water village’s districts. Short trips between river piers are usually taken by small launches or water taxis; boats also connect the village with the Bandar Seri Begawan riverfront. The area is compact and largely pedestrian; wear comfortable shoes for wooden walkways and bring sun protection. Keep some cash for small vendors and boat fares, and be mindful of local customs and modest dress.
