Kaminarimon is the outer gate of the Sensf4-ji Buddhist temple complex in the Asakusa district of Tokyo, and functions as the principal entrance to the temple precinct. The name means “Thunder Gate” and the structure is widely recognized for a large red lantern and guardian statues that mark the entrance.

Directly behind the gate runs the Nakamise shopping street, a roughly 250-meter pedestrian lane lined with traditional shops leading to the temple’s main hall; the gate forms the iconic starting point of that approach. Photographers and visitors commonly pause beneath the central lantern and at the flanking statues of the gods of wind and thunder.

The site has been rebuilt several times over its history; the original gate dates back many centuries and the current structure was rebuilt in 1960 with private funding after wartime destruction. The gate stands as a ceremonial and cultural symbol at the front of Tokyo’s oldest temple.

Kaminarimon is located in Asakusa, within a short walk of Asakusa Station and close to the Sumida River and other central Tokyo attractions.

  • Iconic lantern and statues: The gate features a large red paper lantern flanked by statues of the gods Ffajin and Raijin, forming one of Tokyo's most photographed city symbols.
  • Best time to visit: Arrive early in the morning to avoid the busiest crowds on Nakamise-dori, the shopping street that runs from the gate to the temple.
