Kaminaljuyu
Archaeological Site Pre-Columbian archaeological complex in Guatemala City
Preclassic-to-Classic Maya site within Guatemala City featuring earthen mounds, plazas and excavated remains; visited for urban archaeology and onsite museum exhibits.
Kaminaljuyu is a Pre-Columbian Maya archaeological site located within the urban area of modern Guatemala City that served as a major highland ceremonial and residential centre. It was an important regional seat of power in the Maya highlands.
Visitors see earthen mounds, plazas and the remains of monumental platforms and avenues that mark the ancient ceremonial core; much of the original settlement is buried under or incorporated into the modern city. The visible archaeological area is preserved as a park and has been the focus of excavations that recovered ceramics and stone monuments.
The site was occupied from the Preclassic into the Classic periods and played a central role in highland Maya society, engaging in trade and political relations with lowland Maya polities. Over centuries it declined and was largely abandoned before the Spanish era.
Kaminaljuyu lies within the metropolitan area of Guatemala City, in the southern part of the city, and is now an archaeological park within a dense urban setting.
- Urban overlay: Much of the ancient city is now covered by modern Guatemala City, but visible mounds and an archaeological park mark the main ceremonial core.
