Kamakhya Temple is a major Hindu temple complex on Nilachal Hill in Guwahati, Assam, dedicated to the goddess Kamakhya and recognised as an important Shaktipeeth. The complex is a focal point for tantric and Shakta traditions and attracts pilgrims year-round.

The temple’s principal sanctum houses the symbolic yoni stone rather than an anthropomorphic icon, and the complex includes multiple shrines and smaller temples around the main garbhagriha. The site is particularly known for the annual Ambubachi Mela, held in June, which draws large crowds of devotees and sadhus.

The present form of the temple complex has been rebuilt and expanded at various times over several centuries, reflecting a long history of worship on Nilachal Hill. Architectural elements show regional temple styles and successive phases of construction and repair.

Kamakhya stands on the western side of Guwahati, atop Nilachal Hill overlooking parts of the city and located near the Brahmaputra River in Assam.

Kamakhya Temple is on Nilachal Hill in western Guwahati. From Guwahati Railway Station it is roughly an 8 km taxi or auto-rickshaw ride; from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport plan for about 20-25 km by car. Regular city buses, shared autos and taxis run toward the temple area (Nilachal/ Kamakhya); the temple complex is reached on foot via a short flight of steps from the vehicle drop-off.

• Arrive early morning to get ahead of the main crowds for darshan and to access the hilltop viewpoints overlooking Guwahati before midday heat.
• Avoid Ambubachi Mela (the major fertility festival in June) if you want a calm visit - that event draws very large crowds and changes access and queuing arrangements; if you plan to attend the festival, expect long waits.
• Use the principal Nilachal Hill approaches and the main shrine entrance near the temple car park to save time; many visitors overlook the panoramic terraces on the hill which offer good views of the city and Brahmaputra.
