Dipor Bil Lake

Dipor Bil (also spelled Deepor Beel) is a freshwater lake and associated wetland on the southwestern outskirts of Guwahati in Assam, India, and is an important regional wildlife habitat. The site supports wetland plants, fish and many bird species and has been recognized for its ecological importance.

Key activities are birdwatching and short nature walks along boardwalks and lakeside paths; the wetland is a refuge for resident waterbirds and draws migratory species in winter. The area is managed for conservation under regional protection measures and subject to pressures from urban expansion.

The wetland lies on the floodplain at the southwestern edge of the growing city of Guwahati in Kamrup district of Assam, with roads and urban neighbourhoods close to its margins.

• Ramsar status: Designated a Ramsar wetland in 2002, it is a protected freshwater beel important for resident and migratory waterbirds and fish.
• Birdwatching season: Best time for birdwatching is during the winter migration months when many waterfowl and waders concentrate on the wetland.

Dipor Bil lies a short drive west of Guwahati, Assam. From Guwahati, take the NH27-A route toward Manas National Park access roads or local taxis to the village approaches; local tour operators and the Assam Forest Department can arrange guided visits.

• Visit at dawn for the best bird activity and to see fishermen on the Bil's reed fringes.
• Hire a local naturalist guide - they know seasonal nesting islands and where to find rare species.
• Bring binoculars and a scope if possible; much of the wildlife is best observed from hides or small boats.
