Main image

Kalasasaya is a large ceremonial enclosure within the Tiwanaku archaeological complex in the La Paz Department of Bolivia, notable for its monumental stone architecture and formal rectangular plaza. The structure dates to the period of the Tiwanaku culture that flourished on the southern Lake Titicaca basin in the first millennium CE.

The complex consists of a raised, rectangular stone platform and an inner sunken courtyard measuring roughly 120-130 meters across where carved stone pillars and monoliths are set around the plaza. Visitors examine upright stone stelae, dressed stone walls and alignments used for public ceremonies and astronomical observations as part of the wider Tiwanaku site.

Archaeological evidence attributes construction and use to the Tiwanaku culture between approximately 200 and 1000 CE, with multiple building phases and remodeling over centuries. The enclosure was a focal point for ritual activity and public gatherings during the height of Tiwanaku influence.

Kalasasaya sits on the Altiplano near the modern town of Tiwanaku, roughly 70 kilometers west of the city of La Paz, and lies within the high plains region near Lake Titicaca.

  • Altitude: The site sits at high altitude, around 3,850 meters above sea level, so allow time to acclimatize before strenuous walking.
  • Heritage status: Part of the Tiwanaku UNESCO World Heritage Site, designated in 2000.
