Kalasan
Monument 8th-century Buddhist temple near Yogyakarta, ornate carvings
A town near Yogyakarta that hosts the 8th‑century Kalasan Temple (Candi Kalasan), an early Central Javanese Buddhist monument; visitors study carved stone reliefs and include it on temple circuits with Prambanan and Borobudur.
Kalasan (Candi Kalasan) is an 8th-century Buddhist temple on the Kedu Plain of Central Java, Indonesia, attributed to the Sailendra dynasty and significant for early Central Javanese temple architecture.
The temple features a square base with a tall central superstructure and carved stone reliefs, including decorative Kala motifs and stylised guardian figures; surviving decorative panels and architectural fragments show elaboration typical of Javanese temples of the period. The site is smaller than larger nearby complexes but is often visited in conjunction with the Prambanan and Sewu temples.
Built in the late 8th century under Sailendra patronage, the temple is mentioned in contemporaneous inscriptions that link it to Buddhist dedication and temple endowment. Over centuries the complex fell into ruin and has been the subject of archaeological restoration and study during the 20th century.
Kalasan lies on the Kedu Plain of Central Java near the greater Yogyakarta region, within a short driving distance of the larger Prambanan and Sewu temple complexes and the city of Yogyakarta.
- Inscription date: An 8th-century inscription associated with the site records royal patronage by the Sailendra dynasty and provides a date in the late 700s CE.

Tips for Visiting Kalasan #
- Go early in the morning to enjoy the temple with far fewer visitors than nearby Prambanan and to catch softer light on the stone reliefs.

- Spend extra time close to the lower walls and door frames where intricate bas‑reliefs and floral carvings are concentrated; these details are often missed by visitors who only view the temple from a distance.
