Kala Patthar
Mountain Popular Everest viewpoint and high-altitude trekking landmark
A rocky viewpoint near Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar is prized for close-up views of Mount Everest and neighbouring peaks at sunrise. Trekkers include it on routes from Gorak Shep for panoramic photographs and short high‑altitude climbs.
Kala Patthar is a rocky vantage point in Nepal’s Khumbu region known for offering one of the closest panoramic views of Mount Everest and its south face. It is commonly climbed as a day hike from the nearby settlement of Gorak Shep.
The viewpoint provides expansive views of Everest, Pumori, Nuptse and surrounding peaks, making it a primary destination for trekkers on the Everest Base Camp route seeking dramatic mountain photography at sunrise. The summit is a bare, rocky prominence with limited shelter.
Kala Patthar is not a high peak in the mountaineering sense but functions as an exposed high-altitude viewpoint; the commonly cited elevation is about 5,545 metres and the route is typically tackled after acclimatisation at higher camps. The ascent is steep and short from Gorak Shep, where trekkers stage before or after visits to Everest Base Camp.
The feature lies in the Khumbu valley above the Everest Base Camp complex in eastern Nepal, close to the Pumori massif and the village of Gorak Shep. The Khumbu region’s main access point is Lukla and, more broadly, the area is several hours by air and trek from Kathmandu.
- Elevation: Summit elevation is commonly listed at about 5,545 metres, so altitude acclimatisation and appropriate gear are required for the ascent from Gorak Shep.
- Best time for views: Best light for photography is at sunrise when the south face of Everest is illuminated; the site is exposed to strong sun and cold winds at high altitude.
