How to Get to Kajansi
Kajansi is a small town on the Entebbe-Kampala corridor, easiest reached by road from Entebbe International Airport or Kampala. The closest international airport is Entebbe (EBB); Kajjansi Airfield is a local strip inside Kajansi used for charters and flight training.
Entebbe International Airport (EBB): Entebbe is the main international gateway for central Uganda and is about a 30-45 minute drive from Kajansi depending on traffic. From EBB you can take a metered taxi or app-based ride (Bolt/Uber) to Kajansi - expect roughly UGX 40,000-70,000 (≈USD 11-19) and 30-45 minutes. Cheaper shared minibuses/taxis run from Entebbe town toward Kampala and stop at Kajansi for about UGX 2,000-6,000 (≈USD 0.5-1.6) but require a short transfer from the airport into Entebbe town (local bus or taxi; add 10-20 minutes and a small fare). Prebooked airport transfers or private drivers (useful with luggage) are common and typically cost UGX 70,000-150,000 (≈USD 19-41).
Kajjansi Airfield (no IATA): Kajjansi Airfield is a small local airstrip located inside Kajansi used mainly for charter flights and flight training. If you arrive here by charter, you are effectively already in Kajansi - transfers are generally on-demand by boda-boda (motorcycle) or a short taxi ride (UGX 2,000-10,000, minutes). There is no regular scheduled commercial service comparable to Entebbe International.
Train: There is no regular, reliable passenger rail service that serves Kajansi. Uganda’s rail network is primarily freight and intermittent charter/pilot passenger services; you should not plan to reach Kajansi by public train. Travelling by road is the practical option for almost all visitors.
Bus / Shared minibus (matatu/taxi): Kajansi sits on the Entebbe-Kampala road corridor, so frequent shared minibuses and taxis run between Entebbe town and Kampala and stop at Kajansi. Expect fares in the range of about UGX 2,000-6,000 (≈USD 0.5-1.6) for a single journey and journey times of roughly 20-40 minutes from Entebbe town or 20-40 minutes to nearby parts of Kampala depending on traffic. From main terminals in Entebbe you may need a short hop (local bus or boda-boda) to reach the airport; from Kampala city centres travel times are highly traffic-dependent during peak hours.
How to Get Around Kajansi
Most visitors navigate Kajansi by road: shared minibuses for budget travel, boda-bodas for quick local hops, and ride-hailing or taxis for comfort and airport transfers. For short distances within the town, walking or a boda-boda usually works best; for trips to Kampala or Entebbe choose a car/taxi for reliability during peak traffic.
- Shared minibuses / Matatus (public taxis) (UGX 2,000-6,000) - Frequent, cheap minibuses and shared taxis ply the Entebbe-Kampala road and stop at Kajansi. They are the most economical way to travel short-to-medium distances but can be crowded and leave only when full; keep an eye on your belongings. Expect journey times of 20-45 minutes to nearby centres depending on where you board and current traffic.
- Boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) (UGX 2,000-8,000) - Boda-bodas are ubiquitous and the fastest way to get around locally for short trips, errands, or to reach tucked-away guesthouses. Negotiate the fare before you ride or use a phone call to ask a local average - short trips are usually UGX 2,000-8,000. Helmets are sometimes provided but standards vary; ride defensively and avoid during heavy rain or at night if possible.
- Ride-hailing & metered taxis (Bolt / Uber / local taxis) (UGX 10,000-60,000) - Bolt and Uber operate in Kampala and Entebbe and can sometimes be ordered to Kajansi; metered local taxis and private hires are also available. These are more comfortable and safer with luggage than minibuses or boda-bodas, especially for airport runs. Expect trips within the area to cost roughly UGX 10,000-60,000 depending on distance; rides to/from Entebbe Airport will be at the higher end.
- Car hire / Self-drive (UGX 150,000-400,000 per day) - Hiring a car (with or without a driver) gives the most flexibility for exploring around Kajansi and nearby Kampala/Entebbe. Roads on the main corridor are generally in good condition, but expect potholes on smaller side roads and heavy congestion at peak times. Daily rental rates vary; hiring with a driver is common and recommended if you are unfamiliar with local driving conditions.
- Bicycle / Cycling (UGX 5,000-20,000) - Cycling can be practical for short distances in and around Kajansi during daylight when traffic is lighter. There are limited formal hire shops in the town, so check with guesthouses or local cafés for rentals. Use reflective clothing and avoid riding on the shoulder during rush-hour; roads can be busy and fast-moving vehicles are common.
- Walking - Kajansi is compact enough that many errands, local markets and guesthouses are within walking distance; walking is the best way to explore the immediate town area. Use common-sense precautions after dark - street lighting and sidewalks are limited in places. For anything beyond a few kilometres, prefer a boda-boda or taxi.
