Main image

The Kailasa Temple at Ellora is a monumental monolithic rock-cut Hindu temple in Maharashtra, India, carved directly from a single basalt outcrop in the 8th century CE. It is famed as one of the largest single-piece rock excavations in the world and forms Cave 16 of the Ellora cave complex.

The complex consists of a towering central shrine carved downward into the rock, a large open courtyard, subsidiary shrines and a freestanding Nandi pavilion. Notable features include extensive sculptural programs and reliefs that cover both narrative panels and architectural elements.

Construction is generally dated to the 8th century and is associated with the Rashtrakuta royal patronage; workers excavated the structure from the top down, removing rock to reveal a freestanding temple. The site has remained a major example of Indian rock-cut architecture and continues to be studied for its technical achievement.

Kailasa sits within the Ellora cave complex near the town of Aurangabad in Maharashtra, in western India. The complex is accessible by road from Aurangabad and lies inland from the western coast.

  • Date and patronage: Dated to the 8th century CE and attributed to patronage under the Rashtrakuta dynasty.
  • Scale and designation: Known as one of the largest monolithic rock-cut temples in the world and designated Cave 16 within the Ellora group.

What to See #

  • Main shrine (Cave 16): Located in the Ellora cave complex as Cave 16, this temple was carved from a single basalt outcrop by removing rock from the top down to create a freestanding structure surrounded by a courtyard.
  • Nandi mandapa: A freestanding Nandi pavilion faces the main shrine across the courtyard and is integrated into the overall rock-cut composition.
  • Sculpted panels and reliefs: Extensive sculpted panels and reliefs around the courtyard depict episodes from Hindu epics and Puranic narratives, forming an important part of the temple's iconographic program.
