How to Get to Kailahun
Kailahun is generally reached by long overland journeys rather than by air. There are no regular rail links; public minibuses and coaches are the standard way to arrive from provincial hubs such as Kenema or from Freetown.
Lungi International Airport (FNA): Lungi is Sierra Leone’s main international airport and is the usual entry point for international travellers. Reaching Kailahun from Lungi requires an overland journey; there are no direct scheduled flights into Kailahun.
Kenema (airstrips/charters): Kailahun Province can be served by small airstrips and charter flights into Kenema and other local airstrips, but scheduled commercial services are limited or non-existent - most travellers use road transport.
Train: There is no passenger rail service to Kailahun.
Bus / Shared Taxi / Minibus: Kailahun is reached primarily by road from Kenema or Freetown. From Freetown expect a long overland journey (typically a full day) by intercity coach or shared minibus; from Kenema the trip is shorter. Vehicles leave from main coach/minibus parks; services are basic and travel times depend on road and weather conditions.
How to Get Around Kailahun #
Kailahun’s center is small and walkable for short trips around town and to the market. Roads outside the center can be rough, so allow extra time if you’re moving between neighborhoods or nearby villages. Common transport options are motorcycle taxis and shared/”bush” taxis for intertown travel. Fares are modest - bring small denomination notes and agree prices up front. Travel after dark can be limited and slower.
