Kai Islands
Islands Indonesian archipelago with traditional cultures and marine biodiversity
The Kai Islands in Maluku offer remote white‑sand beaches, coral reefs and traditional villages; travelers dive, fish and sail between islands on local boats.
The Kai Islands (also spelled Kei Islands) are an island group in Indonesia’s Maluku province in the southeastern Maluku archipelago, composed primarily of Kei Besar and Kei Kecil. They are known for clear waters, sandy beaches and traditional island communities.
The islands have long been part of regional maritime trade networks in eastern Indonesia and retain local cultural and linguistic traditions tied to seafaring and subsistence fishing. Colonial and post-colonial administrations influenced infrastructure and trade but many communities maintain traditional lifestyles.
The Kai Islands lie in southeastern Maluku province, accessed by sea and by limited air services from larger Maluku towns and regional transport hubs.
- Beaches and reefs: Known for white-sand beaches, clear seas and coral reefs that make the islands popular for diving, snorkeling and traditional boat travel.
- Access and culture: Part of Maluku province, the islands retain strong local culture and maritime livelihoods, with periodic ferry and small-air connections to larger regional centres.
What to See #
- Kei Besar and Kei Kecil: Kei Besar and Kei Kecil, the two principal islands that form the core inhabited area with traditional villages and coastal beaches.
Tips for Visiting Kai Islands #
- Plan your trip in the dry season (roughly April-October) when sea conditions and visibility for snorkeling/diving are more reliable and inter-island boat connections run more predictably.
- Reach the Kai (Kei) Islands by flying or ferrying via Ambon or Banda Sea hubs and then using local boats to Kei Kecil or Kei Besar; once on the islands, arrange boat transfers early in the day to reach remote beaches and sandbars before winds pick up.
- Don't skip the long sand beaches and nearby sandbars-visitors who stay overnight find late-afternoon and early-morning light and near-empty shores, while day-trippers concentrate on a handful of popular spots.
Best Time to Visit Kai Islands #
Visit during the dry season (May-October) for the best conditions for diving and beach activities.
