Kabuki-za

Kabuki-za is Tokyo’s principal kabuki theatre located in the Ginza district of Chuo Ward. The original theatre opened in 1889; the current building dates from a major reconstruction completed in 2013.

The theatre stages year-round kabuki programs performed by professional companies, with runs that change monthly and often include multiple acts; visitors can buy full-performance tickets or short-act tickets for a single scene. The venue hosts traditional stagecraft including elaborate costumes, makeup and set mechanics.

Kabuki-za has been rebuilt several times after fires, wartime damage and earthquake-related repairs; its long history dates to the late 19th century when it became established as a primary venue for kabuki in Tokyo. The recent reconstruction preserved the theatre’s role as the central performance space for the art form.
