K2 base camp
Area High-altitude trekking base camp for K2 expeditions
K2 base camp on the Baltoro Glacier serves as the staging point for K2 expeditions; visitors are primarily experienced mountaineers and trekkers on the arduous approach from Askole.
K2 base camp is the primary Pakistani-side staging area for expeditions to K2, located in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. It sits at roughly 5,150 meters elevation and functions as the main logistical hub for climbs of K2.
The location has been used as a staging and acclimatization point since early exploratory and mountaineering expeditions in the Karakoram and became central to organized attempts on K2 in the mid-20th century. The first successful ascent of K2 in 1954 by an Italian expedition increased the frequency of expeditions using the camp as their base.
The camp lies on the Godwin-Austen/Baltoro glacier system near the Concordia icefield in the Karakoram range, within Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region. The usual access route is a multi-day glacier trek from the village of Askole, the last roadhead in the upper Indus valley.
- Elevation: Approximately 5,150 meters (about 16,900 feet) above sea level, on the glacier at the foot of K2.
- Trekking access: Reached only by trekking along the Baltoro/Godwin-Austen glacier system from the last roadhead at Askole; there is no road access.
- Views: Clear weather provides direct views of K2 (8,611 m), Broad Peak (8,047 m) and the Gasherbrums, making it a key vantage point for Karakoram peaks.
How to Get to K2 base camp #
Most treks start from Skardu; from there an off-road 4x4 reaches Askole (usually a full day), and a 6-10 day trek along the Baltoro Glacier leads to Concordia and K2 base camp. Permits are required and should be arranged in Skardu through registered operators.
Tips for Visiting K2 base camp #
- Acclimatize properly - the base camp sits above 5,000 m and altitude sickness is a real risk.
- Hire experienced local Guides and glaciology-equipped teams; the Baltoro route crosses unstable moraine and glaciated terrain.
- Plan ample time for travel delays: the approach from Skardu is often affected by weather and road conditions.
