Jurong Island
Area Industrial island housing petrochemical complexes and refineries
Jurong Island is Singapore’s reclaimed petrochemical hub with restricted access; organised industry tours show the scale and logistics of refining and chemical operations.
Jurong Island is an artificial industrial island off Singapore’s southwest coast developed into the country’s main petrochemical and specialty-chemicals hub. It was formed by large-scale land reclamation that joined a number of smaller islands into a single industrial platform.
The island contains dense clusters of chemical plants, storage tanks, pipelines, utilities and marine terminals, and operates under strict security and safety controls. Most of the site is private industrial land; visual access for visitors is limited to permitted industrial tours or views from mainland coastal roads and licensed boat operators.
Creation of the island and its infrastructure took place from the late 20th century onwards under state-led planning to concentrate energy- and chemical-industry activities. The island is managed and serviced by national agencies responsible for industrial land and infrastructure.
Jurong Island sits off the southwest shore of mainland Singapore, connected to the Jurong industrial estate by a causeway and road network; it is part of the broader Jurong industrial area.
- Area and formation: Formed by extensive land reclamation from several smaller islands, creating a single industrial island of roughly 30-32 square kilometres.
- Access: Access is restricted for security and safety; there are no general tourist facilities and public entry is controlled by permit.
What to See #
- Processing and storage clusters: Industrial clusters containing petrochemical processing plants, storage terminals and utilities occupy much of the island and are arranged into production and logistics zones.
- Causeway and access infrastructure: The Jurong Island Highway / causeway connects the island to mainland Jurong and carries inbound and outbound industrial traffic under controlled access.
- Jetties and berths: Marine jetties and deep-water berths handle feedstock and product shipping; these are located along parts of the island's shoreline and quays.
How to Get to Jurong Island #
Jurong Island is accessed via Jurong Island Highway from mainland Jurong; private vehicles need pre-approved passes. Public visitors must join authorized industrial tours or be part of pre-arranged corporate/educational visits.
Tips for Visiting Jurong Island #
- Public access to much of Jurong Island is restricted; pre-arranged industrial tours are required for visitors.
- Check with Singapore's economic development agencies or approved tour operators for arranged visits that sometimes include interpretive talks.
Best Time to Visit Jurong Island #
Visits are dependent on industrial permissions rather than seasons; arrange access in advance.
