Reached by the Jungfrau Railway, Jungfraujoch sits above the Bernese Alps at 3,454 m; tourists visit for year-round snowfields, glacier walks and panoramic views from the Sphinx observatory and mountain facilities.
Jungfraujoch is a high Alpine saddle and visitor complex in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland, located between the Mönch and Jungfrau peaks and serviced by the Jungfrau Railway. The site is known for its high-elevation visitor facilities and glacier views and is commonly called the ‘Top of Europe’.
Facilities at Jungfraujoch include the Sphinx Observatory with external viewing terraces, an ice grotto or Ice Palace cut into the glacier, and indoor exhibition spaces; the Jungfrau Railway terminates at the visitor complex. The railway station sits at roughly 3,454 metres above sea level and provides year-round visitor access by rail from the Kleine Scheidegg junction.
The Jungfrau Railway was completed to the saddle in 1912 after a long period of tunnelling through the massif and the site has since been developed as a major mountain tourism destination in the Swiss Alps. The infrastructure supports large numbers of day visitors arriving by train from lower valley gateways.
Geographically Jungfraujoch lies in the Canton of Bern in the Bernese Oberland; the nearest rail access point is Kleine Scheidegg, with regional connections from Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen to the lower junctions.
