Jotunheimen is a mountain area and national park in southern Norway known for its high peaks, glaciers and rugged alpine terrain; it contains most of Norway’s highest mountains. The massif is a core area for mountaineering, hiking and alpine traverses in Norway.
Key attractions include multiple summits above 2,000 metres such as Galdhøpiggen at 2,469 metres and scenic routes like the Besseggen Ridge, both of which draw hikers and climbers. The landscape includes sharp ridges, glacial valleys and freshwater lakes, with a network of marked trails and staffed mountain huts.
Jotunheimen National Park was created in 1980 to protect the high mountain environment and is centred roughly 300 kilometres north-northwest of Oslo, spanning areas of Innlandet and Vestland counties with road access from nearby towns such as Vågå and Lom.
- Park and Season: Jotunheimen National Park was established in 1980 and contains multiple peaks above 2,000 metres; main hiking season is typically June to September when trails and mountain huts are most active.

How to Get to Jotunheimen #
Jotunheimen is a mountain region reached by road from several gateway towns. From Oslo it is roughly 300 km northwest (about 4-5 hours’ driving) - a common route is to take the E6 north toward Otta and then branch west on regional roads toward Lom / Beitostølen, which serve as access points into Jotunheimen.
Public transport includes long‑distance buses and trains to Otta and Lom with onward local bus or taxi connections to trailheads and visitor centres; from the main access towns expect short walks from parking or bus stops to trail entry points.
Tips for Visiting Jotunheimen #
- If you plan to hike the famous Besseggen Ridge, start very early and use Gjendesheim as your trailhead - catching an early Gjende ferry (Gjendesheim-Memurubu) is the usual way many hikers combine boat and trail to avoid crowds.
- Visit in the high-summer window (July-August) when trails are most likely to be snow-free and mountain lodges and ferries are operating; outside that window many roads and routes can be closed or require mountaineering skills.
- Check weather and daylight forecasts before setting out and aim to do popular hikes like Besseggen on weekdays or at first light to avoid the biggest crowds on narrow ridgelines.
