How to Get to Bukkehøe
Most approaches start from the nearest valley roads in the Jotunheimen area. From Gjendesheim or Fondsbu, access is on marked trails and alpine paths; the nearest larger towns are Otta to the east or Lom to the north. Driving on County Road 51 (Sognefjellsvegen) and local forest roads will get visitors to trailheads; in high season local shuttle and tour operators run transfers to popular trailheads.
Tips for Visiting Bukkehøe
- Start early in summer - snow can linger on the approach well into June; the first light makes the ridge dramatic.
- Check local mountain hut availability (Gjendebu/Turtagrø networks) if planning a multi-day traverse - weather changes fast in Jotunheimen.
- Bring crampons and an ice axe outside of high summer; the ascent routes cross steep, occasionally icy ground.
