Jorasanko Thakur Bari

Jorasanko Thakur Bari is the ancestral home of the Tagore (Thakur) family in the Jorasanko neighborhood of north-central Kolkata, India. It is the birthplace of Rabindranath Tagore (born 7 May 1861) and today functions as a museum and cultural centre preserving the family legacy.

The site houses a collection of manuscripts, letters, photographs and personal effects associated with Rabindranath Tagore and other family members, and it hosts cultural programmes and commemorative events related to Tagore’s life and work. Interior rooms such as family living spaces and Tagore’s study are preserved as part of the museum displays.

The house was the principal family residence of the Tagore household through the 19th and early 20th centuries and was the setting for much of Rabindranath Tagore’s early life. In the decades after his death it was converted and maintained as a museum and cultural institution to conserve the family’s material and intangible heritage.

Located in the Jorasanko quarter of north-central Kolkata, the house sits within the densely built urban core of the city and is part of the cultural and literary map of Kolkata.
