Jodrell Bank Observatory
Historical Site Large radio astronomy observatory with iconic Lovell Telescope
The Lovell Telescope dominates Jodrell Bank’s site; visitors come for guided tours, exhibitions and public programmes explaining decades of British radio-astronomy research.
Jodrell Bank Observatory is a radio astronomy site in Cheshire, England, centred on a large steerable radio telescope and associated research installations. The observatory played a significant role in mid-20th-century radio astronomy and continues to host scientific instruments and outreach facilities.
The site’s most prominent structure is the Lovell Telescope, a 76.2-metre diameter steerable dish completed in the 1950s, together with other antennas and control buildings that form an active research complex. The observatory combines scientific infrastructure with a visitor centre and interpretation of radio astronomy history.
Jodrell Bank was developed by researchers from the University of Manchester for radar and radio-astronomy studies after World War II and grew into a coordinated site of instruments used for observations of the Sun, planets, pulsars and extragalactic sources. Its instruments and historic role are preserved as part of scientific heritage.
The observatory is near the village of Goostrey and the town of Macclesfield in Cheshire, roughly 35 kilometres south of the city of Manchester, set in a rural landscape of fields and low hills.
- Lovell Telescope size: The Lovell Telescope has a 76.2-metre diameter dish and was completed in 1957; it remains a key instrument in early radio astronomy history.

How to Get to Jodrell Bank Observatory #
Jodrell Bank Observatory (Discovery Centre) is in rural Cheshire and is most convenient by car - there is visitor parking at the centre. By public transport take a train on the Crewe-Manchester or Manchester-Chester corridors to a nearby station (Crewe, Macclesfield or Holmes Chapel) and complete the trip by taxi (the final leg is a rural drive). Check for seasonal shuttle buses from nearby towns when planning a visit.
Tips for Visiting Jodrell Bank Observatory #
- Book tickets in advance for any Lovell Telescope tours or special events at the Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre-guided/behind-the-scenes access is limited and often sells out, especially on weekends.
- Visit on a weekday morning to avoid large school groups; the outdoor lawns give excellent unobstructed views of the Lovell Telescope, but interior exhibits and planetarium shows have scheduled time slots.
- Check the centre's event calendar before you go-public stargazing sessions and special talks are held irregularly and require advance booking.
Best Time to Visit Jodrell Bank Observatory #
Visit on weekday shoulder-season dates (spring or autumn) to avoid the busiest times at the visitor centre and telescope tours.
