Jigokudani Monkey Park (Jigokudani Yaen-Koen) is a wildlife park in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, famous for wild Japanese macaques that bathe in natural hot springs, especially during snowy months. It is a popular wildlife-viewing destination with constructed paths and viewing areas.

A maintained trail of about 30 to 45 minutes through forest leads from the park car park to the valley where the hot spring pools and macaques congregate; viewing is from boardwalks and platforms to minimise disturbance. The macaques are wild animals habituated to the presence of humans but remain free-ranging.

The park originated from local efforts to care for injured and orphaned monkeys and developed into an established site for public viewing and primate study.

Located in the Yokoyu River valley near the town of Yamanouchi in Nagano Prefecture, it sits within a mountainous, forested area and is reached by road from Nagano city and surrounding towns.

  • Best time to visit: In winter the macaques are famous for soaking in the park's hot spring pools, offering close but regulated viewing from boardwalks and observation platforms.

How to Get to Jigokudani Monkey Park #

From Nagano city take the Nagano Dentetsu (Nagaden) private railway to Yudanaka Station. From Yudanaka catch the local Nagaden bus (bound for Kanbayashi Onsen/Jigokudani) to the Kanbayashi Onsen stop, then follow the signed valley trail on foot for about 30-40 minutes (roughly 1.5-2 km) along a maintained path to the monkey park entrance.

Tips for Visiting Jigokudani Monkey Park #

  • Take the Nagaden bus to Kanbayashi Onsen (from Nagano or Yudanaka) and plan for the 30-40 minute walk from the trailhead to the monkey area; public transit timetables can affect your arrival window.
  • Visit in winter for the classic hot‑spring bathing scenes (monkeys use the onsen most in the cold months), but go early or late in the day to avoid peak tourist traffic from snow‑season coaches.
  • Prepare for icy or snowy paths in winter by bringing traction aids (microspikes); the approach trail can be slippery and the park requires visitors to stay on the designated route and follow posted rules about not feeding or touching the macaques.
