Ruins Ancient earthen city ruins carved from canyon plateau
Perched on a plateau near Turpan, the earthen Jiaohe ruins preserve a Silk Road city of mud‑brick streets and towers; visitors come for archaeology, desert panoramas and guided tours of Xinjiang’s ancient sites.
The Jiaohe ruins are the remains of an ancient earthen city on a plateau in the Turpan Basin of Xinjiang, China, notable for its well-preserved earth-built structures and defensive setting. The site dates to antiquity and was an important Silk Road centre.
Ruins include stratified residential and administrative areas cut into the plateau, with streets, defensive walls and hollowed buildings visible from surface examination. The city was inhabited for many centuries and its plan and earthen construction techniques make it a key archaeological example of Central Asian urbanism.
The site emerged as a strategic and administrative centre in the Turpan region and was occupied from early historic periods through to the medieval era, finally declining after the Mongol period.
Geographically the ruins stand on a narrow plateau above the valley floor roughly to the west of the modern city of Turpan in Xinjiang, and are accessible from Turpan by road.
- Unique earth architecture: Situated on a natural loess plateau with extensive earthen architecture, the site preserves the layout of a fortified Silk Road city with hollowed earth buildings and streets.
