Jewel Changi Airport
Market Airport complex centered on indoor waterfall and retail
Jewel Changi Airport centers on the Rain Vortex indoor waterfall and a multi‑level indoor garden surrounded by shops and restaurants; transit passengers and local visitors come for the water feature, dining options and plant displays.
Jewel Changi Airport is an indoor mixed-use complex adjoining Singapore Changi Airport’s Terminal 1 that combines retail, dining, gardens and aviation-related facilities. It is anchored by a large glass-and-steel dome and integrates the airport’s terminals with a public garden complex.
The complex’s signature features are the indoor forested terraces and the central waterfall known as the Rain Vortex, surrounded by planting and retail levels. The site functions both as an airport arrival and departure connector and as a public leisure destination for locals and visitors.
Jewel opened in 2019 and was developed as part of Changi Airport’s expansion and commercial strategy, bringing together passenger movement, shopping and urban garden design in a single structure.
The complex is attached to Terminal 1 at Singapore Changi Airport, with pedestrian links to Terminals 2 and 3 and direct access from airport transport nodes; it lies east of central Singapore, adjacent to Changi’s airport terminals.
- Rain Vortex height and visibility: The Rain Vortex is about 40 metres tall and is the world's tallest indoor waterfall, visible from public areas without an entry fee.
- Access and tickets: Most public garden areas are free to enter but several Canopy Park attractions require paid admission and timed tickets during busy periods.
What to See #
- Shiseido Forest Valley: A multi-level indoor garden surrounding the central Rain Vortex and featuring planted terraces and walking routes across several stories within a glass-and-steel dome.
- Rain Vortex: A 40-metre-tall indoor waterfall that is the building's central visual feature, channeling rainwater collected from the dome roof.
- Canopy Park: An upper-level leisure area with walking attractions, gardens and play zones that require separate admission for some attractions such as mazes and suspended play bridges.
How to Get to Jewel Changi Airport #
Jewel Changi Airport is inside Changi Airport complex and connected to Terminal 1; the Changi Airport MRT station (East-West Line, CG2) links directly to the terminals and Jewel via pedestrian links/underpasses - allow about 5-10 minutes’ walk from the MRT/terminal to the mall. By road, Changi Airport is on Airport Boulevard at the east end of Singapore; it’s typically a 20-30 minute drive from the city centre depending on traffic.
Tips for Visiting Jewel Changi Airport #
- Arrive by Changi Airport MRT and use the covered connector to Jewel (you can access Jewel landside without passing through immigration) - mornings on weekdays are noticeably quieter for the Rain Vortex and indoor gardens.
- Check and book tickets in advance for paid attractions in Canopy Park (sky nets, mazes and walking attractions) if you plan to visit; these attractions have limited capacity and sell out on busy days.
- Don't just photograph the Rain Vortex from the terminal levels - take the free escalator/viewing platforms inside to see the illuminated vortex from different heights and angles after dusk.
Best Time to Visit Jewel Changi Airport #
Best visited on weekday mornings to avoid crowds at the indoor attractions (Rain Vortex, shops and dining); crowd levels matter more than weather.
