Jelling stones
Monument Runic stone monuments commemorating Viking-era kings
Large rune stones in Jelling mark early Danish kings and are paired with a museum explaining Viking-era inscriptions and burial mounds. Visitors study the runes, the reconstructed burial sites and the UNESCO-listed landscape.
The Jelling stones are a pair of monumental 10th-century runic stones and a related royal burial and church complex in the village of Jelling in southern Denmark. The site is recognised for its runic inscriptions and as evidence of early medieval royal power and conversion to Christianity.
One stone, raised by King Gorm the Old, commemorates his wife and is stylistically earlier; the larger stone, raised by Harald Bluetooth around the mid-10th century, contains a runic inscription that refers to the unification of Denmark and the Christianisation of the Danes. The stones stand amid royal burial mounds and the remains of an early church.
The monuments were created in the Viking Age and have been studied and conserved as key sources for the history of Denmark’s transition from paganism to Christianity and the formation of royal authority. The site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its historical and cultural significance.
Jelling is located in central Jutland and the monuments lie beside the modern village; the site is accessible by road and rail from nearby regional centres.
- Runic inscriptions: The larger Jelling Stone bears an inscription attributed to Harald Bluetooth proclaiming he unified Denmark and Norway and converted the Danes to Christianity; the stones date to the 10th century.
- UNESCO site: Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ensemble is best visited with the on-site interpretive displays and museum for context on the Viking-era inscriptions and monuments.
