How to Get to Jeffreys Bay

Jeffreys Bay is reached most conveniently via Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) Airport (PLZ) or by road from Cape Town or Port Elizabeth. There is no direct long‑distance passenger rail - most visitors arrive by car, shuttle, or intercity bus from Port Elizabeth.

By Air

Port Elizabeth / Gqeberha Airport (PLZ): The nearest major airport is Port Elizabeth (often called Gqeberha) Airport, about 75-90 km from Jeffreys Bay; a taxi or private shuttle takes roughly 45-60 minutes. Expect private taxi/Uber transfers to cost in the region of ZAR 600-1,000; shared airport shuttles and minibus transfers are commonly cheaper (roughly ZAR 250-400).

Cape Town International Airport (CPT): Cape Town is much farther (about 600-700 km) and only makes sense if you plan to drive the Garden Route or combine trips; domestic flights to Port Elizabeth followed by road transfer are the usual route and add at least 1 hour on the ground plus the flight time between CPT and PLZ.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no regular long‑distance passenger rail service into Jeffreys Bay; the closest larger rail/commuter services are based around Gqeberha/Port Elizabeth. If arriving by train to Gqeberha you will need a road transfer (taxi/minibus) to reach Jeffreys Bay (45-60 min).

Bus: Intercity operators (for example Intercape and regional coach companies) run services between Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha and Jeffreys Bay; typical coach fares are approximately ZAR 80-150 and the trip is about 1-1.5 hours. Local minibus taxis link Jeffreys Bay with nearby towns and are the cheapest local option (fares a few tens of rand).

How to Get Around Jeffreys Bay #

Jeffreys Bay is quite walkable around the main beach, surf spots and downtown; you can cover most sights on foot. For getting farther afield a rental car is the most convenient option, and local taxis or minibus taxis link to nearby towns and airports. Bicycles and scooters are common for short trips, and surf shuttles run during high season and competitions. Expect short local taxi rides to be affordable; plan ahead if you need a ride late at night, as options thin out.

You won’t find late-night clubbing on the scale of a city, but there are plenty of casual places to grab a drink and meet other surfers.

Shopping in J-Bay centers on surf shops, outdoor brands and a handful of independents selling casual clothing and beach gear. You’ll also find small grocery stores and occasional stalls with local crafts and souvenirs. If you’re after surf equipment or outlet deals, the town’s specialty stores are the main draw; for more variety you’ll need to head to larger nearby towns.
