Jebel Musa is a coastal mountain in northern Morocco, in the Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, traditionally identified with the ancient promontory Abyla or the Pillars of Hercules. It stands as a prominent landmark on the African side of the Strait of Gibraltar.

The mountain’s slopes and ridge offer panoramic views over the Strait of Gibraltar and toward the Rock of Gibraltar; on clear days the crossing is visible across the water. Trails lead partway up from nearby towns and there are several lookout points used by walkers and birdwatchers.

The peak and surrounding landscape are natural features long-known to mariners and were named Abyla in antiquity; the modern name is Arabic in origin. The mountain has not been the site of major constructed developments, but has been used locally for grazing and as a navigational landmark for centuries.

Jebel Musa sits on Morocco’s northern coast near the Spanish enclave of Ceuta and the Strait of Gibraltar. It rises directly from the coastal plain and dominates the local skyline between the towns along the strait.

  • Pillars of Hercules: Forms one of the two points historically called the Pillars of Hercules, opposite the Rock of Gibraltar.
  • Height and views: Elevation is approximately 851 metres, giving views across the Strait of Gibraltar on clear days.
