Jaflong is a scenic riverine area in Sylhet Division in northeastern Bangladesh, located on the banks of a transboundary river flowing down from the Meghalaya hills. It is noted for large boulder fields in the river, nearby tea gardens and views of the surrounding Khasi hills.

The landscape is defined by an expanse of rounded boulders and pebbles in the river channel, steep wooded hills behind the river banks and scattered settlements of local communities. The site is a popular day-trip destination from Sylhet for local tourism and photography.

Much of the local economy has involved collection and transport of stones from the riverbed, and the area has a visible mix of natural scenery and small-scale commercial activity. The area also offers viewpoints over the valley and nearby tea plantations.

Jaflong lies close to the Bangladesh-India border in the northeastern Sylhet region and is reached by road from Sylhet city; visitors typically travel by bus or private vehicle for day visits.

  • Best time to visit: Best visited in the dry season from October to March when river levels are lower and riverbed boulders and viewpoints are most accessible.
  • What to expect: The site combines views of large riverine boulders, hills used by local Khasi communities and nearby tea gardens; common access is by road from Sylhet.

How to Get to Jaflong #

Jaflong is about 60 km (roughly 1.5-2 hours) northwest of Sylhet city. From Sylhet, take the Tamabil road (R318) toward the Meghalaya border; minibuses and shared jeeps run regularly to the Jaflong bazaar area. For the closest approach by private car, follow Sylhet-Tamabil Road and turn toward Gowainghat; parking and local boatmen are available at the riverfront.

Tips for Visiting Jaflong #

  • Go early - boats and sand-mining trucks arrive later in the morning and the riverfront is quieter at sunrise.
  • Hire a local boatman from Tamabil or Jaflong bazaar to reach the best gravel banks and viewpoints - the price is negotiable; confirm return time.
  • Bring a light windbreaker; weather from the Meghalaya hills can change quickly and the river breeze is chillier than Sylhet city.

Best Time to Visit Jaflong #

Visit outside the monsoon for stable access to the riverbanks and hill views; winter offers the clearest conditions.
