Iximche

Iximché is a Postclassic Maya archaeological site in Chimaltenango that served as a capital for the Kaqchikel Maya. The site contains plazas, temples, stelae and a ballcourt laid out around elevated stone platforms.

Visitors can walk among ceremonial plazas and platform groups and see evidence of both pre-Hispanic occupation and early colonial interaction. The site is also used for contemporary Maya ritual observances.

Iximché was established by the Kaqchikel Maya in the 15th century and became a regional political center before and during the arrival of the Spanish in the early 16th century; it later featured in early colonial history as Spanish forces established an early administrative presence in the region.

The ruins are located in the Chimaltenango highlands, northwest of Guatemala City, set on a plateau of rolling hills and farmland accessible by paved and secondary roads.

• Historical note: Founded by the Kaqchikel Maya in the Late Postclassic, the site later hosted early Spanish colonial activity, including a brief period as a colonial administrative center in the 1520s.
