Ivan Vazov National Theatre

The Ivan Vazov National Theatre is Bulgaria’s national theatre and a landmark cultural institution located in central Sofia. The theatre building dates from the early 20th century and is named for the writer Ivan Vazov.

The exterior displays a Neo-Baroque style and the theatre hosts the national company’s repertoire of plays, official performances and cultural events. Its prominent location and classical façade make it one of Sofia’s most photographed buildings.

The theatre was constructed and opened in the first years of the 1900s as part of Sofia’s modernization after independence, and it has served continuously as the principal stage for Bulgarian dramatic arts since that period.
