Itbayat Island Island

Itbayat Island is the largest and northernmost inhabited island of the Batanes group in the Philippines. It forms its own municipality within Batanes and is known for steep volcanic terrain and traditional Ivatan stone architecture.

On the island visitors find rugged sea cliffs, terraced farmland and compact villages with traditional stone houses. Coastal walks, village trails and small-boat travel are the usual ways to experience the island; there are no large roads or major tourist facilities.

The island has been inhabited by the Ivatan people for centuries and has retained many traditional building techniques adapted to wind and sea conditions. Contact with Spanish colonial authorities and later national administration shaped modern governance, but local cultural practices remain prominent.

Itbayat sits in the Luzon Strait at the northern edge of the Philippine archipelago, forming part of Batanes province. The nearest larger settlement is Basco on Batan Island, reached by inter-island boat services.

Both options are weather-sensitive; schedule buffer days. From Manila, fly to Basco, then connect onward.

• If flying, book flights early: small commuter flights (e.g., Sky Pasada) between Basco and Itbayat are limited and weather-dependent.
• Bring cash and basic supplies; many homestays and small shops do not accept cards.
• Respect Ivatan stone houses and private property - note the low, thick-walled houses built for typhoon resilience.
