Istana Nurul Iman
Palace Official Sultan's palace and world's largest residential palace
Official palace of Brunei’s Sultan, Istana Nurul Iman is one of the world’s largest residential palaces; it opens to the public during Hari Raya for crowds to view its ceremonial halls.
Istana Nurul Iman is the official residence and principal workplace of the Sultan of Brunei and is widely described as a very large royal palace. The building was designed by Filipino architect Leandro V. Locsin and completed in 1984.
The palace serves as the Sultan’s private residence and the venue for major state ceremonies, official receptions and royal functions. Its scale and formal halls are used for large banquet and ceremonial occasions.
Constructed in the late 20th century for the current Sultan, the palace replaced earlier royal residences and has been the administrative and ceremonial centre of the monarchy since its completion. It is maintained as a private royal compound and is not generally open to tourists.
Istana Nurul Iman stands in the vicinity of Bandar Seri Begawan and functions as both a residence and the central location for national ceremonial events; it is visible from parts of the surrounding area but entry is controlled by royal protocol.
- Public access restrictions: Public access is highly restricted; the palace opens to the public mainly during the annual Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house and for certain state events.
How to Get to Istana Nurul Iman #
Istana Nurul Iman is in Bandar Seri Begawan. The usual way to reach it is by car or taxi from the city centre - it is a short drive from central Bandar Seri Begawan. Note that the palace is the Sultan’s official residence and is not generally open to independent visitors except during official events, and there is limited public transport directly to the palace grounds.
Tips for Visiting Istana Nurul Iman #
- Plan any interior visit for the Hari Raya open-house period when the palace is traditionally opened to the public; if you want to see interiors expect long queues and arrive very early.
- You cannot tour the palace grounds freely year-round, so budget time for a river- or Kampong Ayer boat trip - the Brunei River provides the most photogenic, unobstructed views of the palace exterior.
- For best photos of the palace facade, aim for early evening light from the riverfront; daytime coach tours tend to cluster around mid‑day and make waterfront viewpoints crowded.
Best Time to Visit Istana Nurul Iman #
