Istakhr (Estakhr) is an archaeological site in Fars province of southern Iran, situated in the plain north of the Persepolis area and within the cultural landscape of ancient Persis. The site contains multi-period remains spanning late Achaemenid, Sasanian and early Islamic occupations.
Archaeological traces include ruined buildings, walls and strata that record the settlement’s role as a regional administrative and cultic center after the fall of Persepolis. Istakhr served as an important local center in late antiquity and into the early medieval period, with evidence of continued occupation and reuse of earlier monumental architecture.
The site lies within the greater Persepolis-Pasargadae area of Fars and is studied as part of the region’s sequence of ancient capitals and secondary settlements. It is accessible from the Marvdasht plain and forms part of Iran’s concentration of major archaeological sites in this province.
