Island Peak
Mountain Popular trekking peak in the Everest region
Island Peak (Imja Tse) rises above the Imja Valley in Nepal’s Everest region; trekkers use it for technical summit climbs after acclimating in Dingboche and Chhukung. Visitors come for glacier travel, crampon-and-ice-axe routes, and Himalayan views.
Island Peak, locally known as Imja Tse, is a 6,189 meter mountain in Nepal’s Khumbu region and is classified as a popular trekking/climbing peak. It sits above the Imja Valley and is frequently attempted by trekkers acclimatizing in the Everest area.
Climbing the peak involves glacier travel, snow and ice slopes, and a final summit ridge that requires fixed ropes and basic technical equipment. The mountain is often climbed as part of a guided expedition after acclimatization in nearby villages such as Chukung and Dingboche.
The name Island Peak was given by a 1953 British expedition because the mountain appears like an island rising from the surrounding glacier ice. Since then it has become a standard objective for climbers transitioning from trekking to moderate alpine mountaineering.
Island Peak lies within Sagarmatha National Park in Solukhumbu District, in eastern Nepal’s Everest region. The common access route approaches through the Imja Valley and the village of Chukung, reached by multi-day treks from Lukla and the main Sherpa settlements.
- Elevation and climbing: The peak's elevation is 6,189 meters above sea level, and it is commonly climbed as a technical trekking peak requiring crampons, fixed ropes and basic ice-axe skills.
What to See #
- Chukung: Chukung village is the usual approach point and high camp area for climbers, providing lodges and services for acclimatization and access to the Imja valley.
- Summit and route: The mountain's summit (Imja Tse) sits above the Imja Glacier and is reached via a mixed snow and rock route that finishes on a narrow summit ridge.
How to Get to Island Peak #
Island Peak (Imja Tse) is approached from the Khumbu (Everest) region. The trek to the general approach takes several days; local trekking agencies arrange permits, guides and porters and will give detailed day-by-day access information.
Tips for Visiting Island Peak #
- Island Peak (Imja Tse) is a regulated trekking peak-book permits through the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) and allow sufficient time for acclimatization on the standard approach via Namche/Chhukung rather than rushing from lower elevations.
- Climbers make a pre-dawn summit push (often around 1-2 a.m.) to use firmer ice and avoid afternoon weather and rockfall; hiring a licensed guide and fixing a route plan in advance reduces delays and crowd bottlenecks on key sections.
- Avoid peak-season congestion by spacing acclimatization days and using less popular camps (for example, overnighting in Chhukung before the summit bid) so you join summit parties staggered over multiple days.
Best Time to Visit Island Peak #
Island Peak (Imja Tse) is best climbed in the pre‑monsoon (April-May) or post‑monsoon (September-November) seasons when weather is most stable and visibility is good.
