Main image

Isla del Caño is an island and protected biological reserve off the coast of the Osa Peninsula in Puntarenas Province, Costa Rica, noted for its marine biodiversity and coral reefs. The island and surrounding waters are managed to conserve terrestrial and marine ecosystems and are a recognized site for recreational diving and scientific study.

Snorkeling and scuba diving are primary visitor activities; the reefs host corals, fish and other marine life that attract divers from the mainland. The island also contains archaeological evidence of pre-Columbian occupation, and limited guided visits include informational context about those finds.

The island was set aside under Costa Rican conservation regulations to protect habitats and cultural sites, and it is administered as a biological reserve with limits on landing and activities. Management focuses on preserving both the island’s terrestrial ecology and the surrounding marine environment.

Geographically the island lies off the southwest Pacific coast of Costa Rica near the Osa Peninsula and is approached by boat from coastal towns on the peninsula. It is located within Puntarenas Province and is remote compared with mainland tourist centers.

  • Access restrictions: Access is controlled because the land and surrounding ocean are part of a protected area, and most visits are organized through licensed tour operators from the Osa Peninsula.

What to See #

  • Marine and biological reserve: The island is protected as a biological reserve and the surrounding waters are a marine protected area popular with scuba divers and snorkelers for coral and pelagic species.
  • Diving and snorkeling sites: Shallow reefs and underwater visibility around the island support regular guided dive routes that highlight hard corals and reef fish communities.
