Isla de la Plata

Isla de la Plata is a small island off the coast of Manabí Province in Ecuador that is part of Machalilla National Park and renowned for its seabird colonies. It supports species typical of the Galápagos region such as blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds and pelicans, which makes it a popular wildlife day-trip from the coastal town of Puerto López.

The island features short visitor trails, viewpoints for bird colonies and a few landing coves for boats; guided walks commonly last one to two hours and are paired with snorkeling opportunities in nearby waters. Marine life around the island is protected under the national park, and visits are regulated by park authorities.

Historically the island has long been used by local fishermen and more recently incorporated into the Machalilla protected area network to conserve seabirds and marine habitats.

It lies off the coast of central-west Ecuador, reached by short boat trips from Puerto López and other nearby ports in Manabí.

• Access and nickname: Often called “the little Galápagos,” the island is part of Machalilla National Park and is a common day-trip from Puerto López with boat rides of about 30-60 minutes depending on sea conditions.
• Best time and conditions: Best wildlife viewing is during the nesting season for seabirds and in calm seas for boat-based marine-wildlife spotting and snorkeling.

What to See#

• Birdwatching trails: Trails and observation points used on day trips that allow visitors to see breeding colonies of blue-footed boobies, brown pelicans and frigatebirds.
• Shoreline coves and snorkel sites: Small rocky coves and a few shallow bays where boats land and visitors can snorkel or swim; marine life around the island is protected as part of the neighbouring national park.

From the small town of Puerto López (Manabí) - the only practical departure point - Isla de la Plata is reached by boat from the Puerto López pier/malecon. Local tour operators and fishermen run daily trips; the boat departure point is a short walk (a few minutes) from the town center and the bus drop-off.

Puerto López sits on Ecuador’s coastal highway (E-15/Vía La Costa). You can reach Puerto López by intercity buses or by car from Manta (roughly 70 km along the coastal road E-15). Once in Puerto López follow signs to the malecon/port for the island tour departures.

• Take one of the early morning boats from Puerto López - guides leave at first light and mornings are best for bird activity (blue‑footed boobies, frigatebirds) and to avoid larger afternoon boatloads.
• Book your boat and licensed guide in advance during peak season (July-September, when humpback whales are most often seen off the coast) to secure space and to ensure the required park fees and permits are handled.
• Bring binoculars and stay on the marked trail during the short guided walk - the island is small and most wildlife viewing happens from coastal viewpoints rather than long hikes.
• Combine a half‑day Isla de la Plata trip with whale‑watching or a Puerto López nature walk so you avoid back‑to‑back boat departures and crowded return times.
