Isla de La Cartuja
Island Seville island hosting expo grounds and cultural venues
Seville’s Isla de La Cartuja sits in the Guadalquivir and contains the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo, Expo ‘92 pavilions and the Isla Mágica theme park; visitors go for museums, riverside walks and events.
Isla de La Cartuja is an island in the Guadalquivir River within the city of Seville, Spain, notable as the main site of the 1992 Universal Exposition. Since the Expo it has been redeveloped for cultural institutions, parks and technology-business uses.
Originally occupied by a Carthusian monastery from which the island takes its name, the site became the venue for Expo ‘92; post-expo planning converted many pavilions into cultural venues and business parks. Redevelopment has combined historic structures with late 20th-century exhibition architecture.
Positioned within the Guadalquivir River just north of Seville’s historic centre, the island lies within the city’s urban area and is connected to the mainland by several bridges and city transport links.
- Expo legacy: The island was the principal site for Seville's 1992 Universal Exposition and remains a mixed-use cultural and technology area with museums, parks and business parks.
- Access and transport: Accessible from Seville's centre by road bridges including the Puente de la Barqueta and the Puente del Alamillo, with pedestrian and public-transport links to the city.
What to See #
- Expo '92 site: A former site of the 1992 Universal Exposition where several pavilions and infrastructure were constructed for the event and many have since been repurposed for cultural and commercial use.
- CAAC (contemporary art centre): Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo housed in the former Carthusian monastery, presenting contemporary art within the island's historic building complex.
- Isla Mágica theme park: Isla Mágica, a theme park occupying part of the island and using purpose-built attractions and water features from the post-expo redevelopment.
