Isla Barro Colorado
Island Tropical island hosting renowned tropical research station
In Gatun Lake, Isla Barro Colorado hosts the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute’s research station; ecotourists and scientists visit for tropical-forest trails, birding and biodiversity studies.
Barro Colorado Island is a forested island in Gatun Lake within the Panama Canal, designated as a biological research reserve in 1923 and operated by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. It is one of the best-studied tropical forest sites in the world.
The island is used primarily for ecological and biological research rather than conventional tourism; trails and study plots, long-term wildlife monitoring, and research laboratories are the main on-site features. Field stations and specimen collections support work on tropical ecology, behavior, and biodiversity.
The island formed when the lowlands were flooded during creation of Gatun Lake in the early 20th century. The Smithsonian established a permanent research station there in 1923, and it has hosted continuous scientific work since then.
Geographically it sits in Gatun Lake in the Panama Canal zone near the town of Gamboa and the canal infrastructure, within the Panama Canal watershed; it is accessed by boat from nearby canal towns.
- Access: Managed as a long-term tropical research station by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute; access is primarily for scientists and organised research visits, with limited public or guided visits arranged through STRI.
- Origin: Originated when the Gatun Lake reservoir was created during construction of the Panama Canal; the island preserves lowland tropical forest isolated by the lake.

- Travel to Barro Colorado Island through the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) or an authorized operator based in Gamboa - access is controlled and most public visits are arranged through STRI or licensed boat services.
- Book the earliest boat available and aim for a morning guided walk: wildlife activity (birds, monkeys) is highest then and trails are quieter before larger tour groups arrive.
- Ask to visit the research station or take an STRI‑led tour - many casual visitors only circle the island by boat and miss the trails and interpretive talks that explain the island's long‑term research projects.
