Ischigualasto Provincial Park

Ischigualasto Provincial Park is a protected area in San Juan Province, Argentina, known for its exceptional Triassic fossil record and unusual badland landscapes. It is part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing together with Talampaya National Park for its palaeontological and geological significance.

The park’s highlights are extensive, well-exposed fossil-bearing strata and sculpted rock formations that form valleys, hoodoos and eroded plateaus. Guided drives and marked viewpoints let visitors see fossil sites and distinctive rock shapes at close range.

The formations preserve sedimentary layers from the Late Triassic, yielding fossils that document early dinosaur evolution and contemporaneous vertebrates and plants. Scientific work in the area has been important for understanding Triassic ecosystems in Gondwana.

Located in northwestern Argentina’s San Juan Province, the park sits in an arid, high plateau region with sparse vegetation and is accessed by road from nearby towns and the provincial capital.

• Fossil beds: Contains rich Late Triassic fossil beds that have produced early dinosaur, reptile and plant remains, with deposits roughly 230 to 200 million years old.
• Landscape nickname: Often called the ‘Valley of the Moon’ for its otherworldly badland landforms composed of heavily eroded volcanic and sedimentary strata.

By road: Ischigualasto Provincial Park (Valle de la Luna) is reached by paved and gravel provincial roads from the main urban centres of San Juan Province. From the city of San Juan the drive is roughly 300-330 km (about 4-5 hours) following National Route 40 and regional roads toward the park; allow additional time for final stretches on unpaved access roads.

There is limited public transport directly to the park-most visitors reach it by private car, organized tour, or regional bus service to nearby towns and then a local transfer to the park entrance.

• Ischigualasto (Valle de la Luna) is only accessible by the park's guided circuits-plan your visit around the park's scheduled bus tours from the visitor area rather than trying to drive independently.
• Book the earliest available circuit to avoid the heat and to see the rock colors and dinosaur-bearing formations in clearer morning light; tours typically follow fixed routes and timetables.
• Combine a visit with nearby Talampaya National Park (La Rioja) if your schedule allows-many travelers organize multi-day travel through both parks to maximize paleontological and scenic viewing.
