Iona National Park is a large protected area in Namibe Province in southwestern Angola that conserves a stretch of coastal desert, rocky inselbergs and dry riverbeds. It preserves characteristic Namib Desert landscapes and supports a suite of desert-adapted plants and animals.

The park’s terrain includes sweeping dunes and rocky mesa formations, with vegetation adapted to arid conditions and specialised plant species. Wildlife in the park includes species adapted to desert life and migratory birds that use seasonal water sources.

Iona was designated to protect one of Angola’s most distinctive arid regions and has been subject to post-conflict conservation and management efforts. Access can be remote and requires planning because infrastructure is limited within the park.

The park lies in the far southwest of Angola along the Atlantic coast and borders the Namib Desert corridor. The nearest provincial centre is Namibe town, with overland routes required to reach park entry points.

  • Landscape and Flora: The park protects a coastal desert landscape with dunes, inselbergs and rugged rocky outcrops, and is noted for unusual desert-adapted flora such as Welwitschia.
