Iona Abbey is a historic monastic site on the island of Iona off the west coast of Scotland, originally associated with St Columba in the 6th century. The island and abbey are central to early Scottish and Gaelic Christian history and remain a focus for pilgrimage and study.

The site features medieval abbey ruins and an active abbey church that visitors can enter, plus carved stone crosses and cloister remains. The small island setting means highlights are concentrated within a short walking area around the abbey and nearby graveyard.

A monastery was founded on Iona by St Columba in AD 563; the site continued as a religious centre through the medieval period and was later rebuilt and restored at various times. The present abbey complex contains medieval fabric alongside later conservation work and continues to host religious communities and visitors.

Iona sits off the southwest coast of Mull in the Inner Hebrides; the crossing from Mull (Fionnphort) takes under 20 minutes by small ferry, and the island is a short distance from the nearest town on Mull by road and sea.

• Abbey Church: The Abbey Church is the main medieval fabric on the site, with a nave and cloister ruins reflecting medieval monastic architecture.
• St Martin’s Cross: St Martin’s Cross is an early medieval high cross on Iona dating to the 8th century and stands near the abbey complex as an important carved monument.
• Iona Nunnery: The Iona Nunnery consists of ruined cloisters and domestic buildings north of the abbey, dating broadly to the medieval period.
• Reilig Òdhrain (graveyard): Reilig Òdhrain (the island burial ground) is the traditional cemetery associated with the abbey, long linked to early Gaelic and Scottish royal burial traditions.

Ferries to Iona depart from Fionnphort on the Isle of Mull. From Glasgow, drive to Oban or take public transport to Craignure and then on to Fionnphort; the final ferry crossing is short (few minutes). Book in advance in summer.
