Iona
Island Small Scottish island famed for early Christian monastery
Small Inner Hebridean island with Iona Abbey and early Christian connections to St Columba. Pilgrimage sites, simple beaches and island walking draw visitors.
Iona is a small island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland and is known as an early centre of Gaelic Christianity - a monastic community was established there by St Columba in 563.
The island’s main attractions are its religious heritage and coastal scenery. Key features include the ruined and restored monastic buildings of Iona Abbey, carved stone crosses and a series of short walking routes along beaches and headlands. The scale is compact and most sites are within easy walking distance of each other.
A Christian monastery was established by St Columba in 563 and became an influential religious centre for the western Scottish and Irish kingdom centuries later. The site experienced Viking raids and later medieval rebuilding; the modern Iona Community, founded in 1938, has played a role in conservation and ecumenical activities on the island.
Geographically the island sits off the southwest coast of the Isle of Mull in western Scotland. The regular vehicle ferry links from Fionnphort on Mull provide the island’s primary access and the surrounding landscape is a mix of low dunes, machair grassland and exposed rocky shore.
- Access: Ferry connections operate from Fionnphort on the Isle of Mull; services are frequent in summer but limited in winter.
- Practicalities: Accommodation and shops are limited on the island, so plan supplies and bookings ahead during peak season.
What to See #
- Iona Abbey: Monastic complex on the island's west side with origins on the early medieval monastery founded by St Columba in 563; extant buildings and ruins date largely from the medieval period and later restorations.
- St Martin's Cross: Historic high cross and carved stone located near the abbey, visible as a freestanding monument.
- St Oran's Chapel: Small graveyard and simple stone chapel associated with early Christian worship on the island, located near the abbey complex.
- St Columba's Bay: Sheltered bay on the island's west coast noted for white sand and clear shallows, popular for short walks and shoreline views.
