Ioannina Travel Guide
City City in Epirus with rich cultural heritage
A lake city ringed by Byzantine walls and a castle that overlooks Pamvotida. Visitors boat to the island shrine, browse silversmith workshops and use Ioannina as a base for Pindus mountain hikes.
Why Visit Ioannina? #
Lake Pamvotida and its small inhabited island create a singular setting for Ioannina, where the medieval Ioannina Castle and Byzantine museums chronicle the city’s layered past. The island’s associations with Ottoman leader Ali Pasha draw history buffs, while a long-standing silverwork tradition and the lively bazaar keep crafts and tavernas front and center. Mountain trails into Epirus lie close by, offering pastoral scenery beyond the lakeshore.
Who's Ioannina For?
Lake Pamvotis and the surrounding Pindus foothills give Ioannina strong natural appeal: island monastery walks, lakeside paths, and easy access to Zagori and Vikos Gorge for serious day hikes and longer treks.
Cobblestone streets, the island’s small monastery and lakeside cafés create an intimate atmosphere for couples. Evening promenades and waterside tavernas make for low-key dinners and scenic sunsets.
Epirote cuisine shines in Ioannina with local pies, grilled meats and mountain cheeses found in tavernas and markets. Family-run restaurants near the castle serve authentic regional specialties at affordable prices.
Vikos Gorge and nearby rivers offer canyoning, rafting and multi-day treks; local outfitters arrange guided climbs and kayaking. Winter sports are reachable in the Pindus range when snow allows.
Ioannina is budget-friendly with guesthouses and small hostels, serving as a launch point for Zagori villages and long-distance trails. It’s quieter than the Greek islands but efficient for independent hikers exploring the Pindus.
Lakeside promenades, small museums and gentle boat trips to the island suit families with children. Accommodations range from family rooms to apartments, though some mountain excursions require older kids.

How to Get to Ioannina
Ioannina is served by a small regional airport (Ioannina National Airport, IOA) and is linked to the rest of Greece by the nationwide KTEL intercity bus network. For international travellers Athens International Airport (ATH) is the main gateway; regional passengers also use Aktion/Preveza (PVK) and transfer to Ioannina by road or coach.
Ioannina National Airport (IOA): Ioannina’s small regional airport sits a few kilometres north of the city centre. Taxi rides take roughly 10-15 minutes and cost about €8-€15; car hire is available at the airport and drives into town take 10-20 minutes depending on traffic.
Aktion / Preveza Airport (PVK): Aktion (Preveza) is the nearest alternative full-service regional airport on the Ionian coast. By road it’s typically around 1-1.75 hours to Ioannina; KTEL coach services and regional buses link Preveza/Arta with Ioannina in about 1.5-2 hours with fares commonly in the €10-€15 range. Taxis or private transfers are possible but considerably more expensive.
Athens International Airport (ATH): Athens is the main national and international hub for northern Epirus. There are occasional domestic flights to Ioannina (seasonal/schedule-dependent); otherwise most travellers take a long-distance KTEL coach from Athens (Kifissos Bus Station) to Ioannina - journey time roughly 5.5-6.5 hours and fares typically around €25-€35. Car hire from Athens is also an option for a 4.5-6 hour drive depending on route and stops.
Train: Ioannina currently has no direct national rail connection. The nearest major OSE rail hubs are cities such as Larissa or Thessaloniki; travellers can take Hellenic Railways (OSE/TrainOSE) services to those stations and then continue to Ioannina by KTEL coach or car. Expect a multi-stage journey and allow several hours for the rail+bus combination.
Bus: Intercity buses run by KTEL Ioanninon form the backbone of long-distance travel to and from Ioannina. The main KTEL station in Ioannina (KTEL Ioanninon) has frequent routes to Athens (about 5.5-6.5 hours, ~€25-€35), to Preveza/Arta (around 1.5-2 hours, ~€10-€15) and to coastal ports such as Igoumenitsa (around 1-1.5 hours, typically under €15). Buses are reliable and the most practical public option for reaching Ioannina from other parts of Greece.
How to Get Around Ioannina
Ioannina's compact core is best explored on foot, with taxis and short local buses filling gaps; for regional travel the KTEL intercity coaches are reliable. If you plan to explore remote Epirus villages, a rental car gives the most freedom and is highly recommended.
- Local buses (municipal) (€1-€1.50) - Ioannina has a modest local bus network connecting neighbourhoods and the lakeside areas. Single fares are low (carry change or a ticket bought at kiosks) and routes concentrate on the centre, university and hospital. Buses are useful for short hops but services are less frequent evenings and Sundays - check timetables at the station or local stops.
- KTEL regional buses (€6-€35) - KTEL Ioanninon runs frequent intercity routes linking Ioannina with Athens, Preveza, Igoumenitsa, Thessaloniki and other Epirus towns. Coaches are comfortable and affordable for long distances; they're the go-to option if you don't have a car. Book online for peak season and expect multi-hour journeys on some routes.
- Taxis (€5-€20) - Taxis are plentiful around the central square and the lakefront; short in-town rides are quick and economical, while airport or long-distance trips cost more. Metered fares start with a flag rate and then charge per kilometre - typical central short journeys commonly fall in the €5-€12 range. Night and extra-luggage supplements may apply, so confirm the expected fare for longer transfers beforehand.
- Car rental / Driving (€30-€70 per day) - Hiring a car is the most flexible way to explore Ioannina and the wider Epirus region (mountains, monasteries, Zagori villages and the lake). Roads are generally good but some mountain routes are narrow and winding - a small, nimble car works well. Expect daily rental rates from the low tens of euros (seasonal); factor parking in the centre and occasional tolls on main routes.
- Bicycle / E-bike (€5-€20 per day) - Cycling around central Ioannina and along the lake promenade is pleasant and practical for short trips; some local shops rent bikes and e-bikes by the hour or day. Infrastructure is limited outside the pedestrianized lakeside areas, so avoid heavy-traffic roads and use bike paths where provided. A bike is a good way to see the lakeside and island quickly without driving.
- Walking - Ioannina's compact centre - the lakeside, castle quarter and old town - is very walkable and often the fastest way to get around. Sidewalks and promenades around Lake Pamvotis make walking enjoyable; bring comfortable shoes for cobbled lanes in the castle and old-town areas.
