Independence Palace
Historical Site Historic Saigon presidential palace and reunification symbol
Ho Chi Minh City’s Independence Palace (Reunification Palace) preserves 1960s modernist interiors, war rooms and a rooftop helipad; visitors come for Vietnam War history and guided tours.
Independence Palace, commonly known internationally as the Reunification Palace, is a landmark building in central Ho Chi Minh City that served as the presidential residence and seat of government of South Vietnam. It is noted for its intact 1960s interiors and the role it played during the final days of the Vietnam War.
Interior highlights include state reception rooms, offices and an underground command centre; many original furnishings and period fittings have been preserved and are shown on guided tours. The palace grounds include a lawn where a military vehicle on display commemorates the moment government control changed in April 1975.
The current modernist building was constructed to replace an earlier colonial-era palace and was intended for official state functions and the presidency. It was the target and backdrop of critical events at the end of the Vietnam War when North Vietnamese forces entered the city in 1975.
The palace stands in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City, just north of the Saigon River and within walking distance of other central attractions such as Ben Thanh Market and the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon.
