Imatong Mountains

Mountains Mountain range with montane forests and high peaks

The Imatong Mountains in Eastern Equatoria include Mount Kinyeti, the range’s highest peak. The area supports montane forest and endemic species; experienced trekkers visit for remote hiking and biodiversity.

The Imatong Mountains are a rugged mountain range in Eastern Equatoria in southern South Sudan, extending close to the Uganda border and rising sharply from surrounding plains. The range includes the highest peaks in the area and supports montane forests at higher elevations.

Higher slopes host patches of montane forest and endemic plant communities that contrast with surrounding savanna, and the mountains are the source of streams that feed local river systems. The area is important for biodiversity and traditional land use.

Local communities, including Nilotic and other ethnic groups, have long used the mountains for grazing, cultivation of upland crops and forest resources; the colonial and post-colonial periods brought botanical and geographic surveys but large parts remain sparsely mapped and managed. Conservation interest stems from the range’s distinct ecology and endemic species.

Geographically the Imatong Mountains lie in southeastern South Sudan near the international border with Uganda, within Eastern Equatoria state and rising from the floodplain and savanna of the region.

  • Highest peak: Mount Kinyeti reaches approximately 3,187 m above sea level, making it the highest point in the range.
