Imam Ali Shrine

The Imam Ali Shrine is the major Shia Muslim shrine built around the tomb of Ali ibn Abi Talib, located in the city of Najaf in southern Iraq. It is one of the most important religious sites for Shia Islam and a focal point for pilgrimage.

Ali, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, was killed in 661 CE and buried at Najaf; a shrine developed over his tomb and was expanded and rebuilt repeatedly through the medieval and modern periods. The site has been the subject of continual restoration and embellishment by successive Muslim rulers and local endowments and today is managed by a religious waqf authority.

The shrine sits in central Najaf, in Najaf Governorate, roughly 160 km south of Baghdad, on flat terrain that is dominated by the mosque complex and surrounding pilgrimage infrastructure.

• Visitor access: Access to the inner sanctum is restricted; modest dress is required and separate facilities are provided for men and women during high-attendance periods.
• Peak times: The site is one of the principal Shia pilgrimage destinations and sees especially heavy crowds during Muharram and Arbaeen observances, when local logistics and accommodation fill rapidly.

What to See #

• Golden dome and minarets: The gilded dome and twin minarets form the most visible part of the complex and sit above the burial chamber on the shrine's central axis.
• Zarih (burial enclosure): An ornate latticed enclosure surrounds the burial chamber; pilgrims traditionally approach this zarih to touch or view the tomb from the outer railings.
• Courtyards and arcades: Large paved courtyards and covered arcades used for prayer and mass gatherings during major Shia observances, with covered walkways linking the main mosque to ancillary buildings.
